DAY 4 MBTI Certification in Tampa

Whoo Hoo!  It's done, it's finished, and I'm officially certified to use MBTI.  Spent this last day reviewing and role playing ethical dilemmas in the administration of the instrument with clients.

Overall, the certification was a valuable experience, having been fortunate to have been trained by the past CEO of the Center for Applied Psychological Testing (CAPT).

Participants in my leadership programs will be tickled to know that I too must sit through days of training, work into the wee hours each evening to catch up on work that still must get done, and be fresh and civil enough the next day to retain info from the prior day while continuing to absorb and apply new information!

This is what leadership is all about!  It's not the easiest path, nor the path most taken.  Leaders step up, make tough choices, persist amid challenges and crises, and by doing so, encourage others to rise as well.

DAY THREE MBTI Certification in Tampa

Started the day with a coaching practice session utilizing type knowledge. Practicing these skills with a type opposite your own was particularly helpful. The afternoon consisted of role plays revealing ethical dilemmas, reliabiliy and validity issues of the MBTI, and statistical correlations of the MBTI with professions. And, of course, a 4th exam. One more test to go...Whoo hoo!

DAY TWO - MBTI Certification

So much information. Jeez Louise. Lots of information; lots of details but the knowledge and application possibilities are powerful. The facilitator, Jerry, is a phenomenal instructor and presenter. He takes complex subjects, uses great examples to illustrate the concepts and makes it all seem so easy and simple to understand.

The role play this morning provided practice in having a participant self-assess their type and verifiy results with the MBTI report. Learning focused on being specifically attuned to the words used to describe type, preferences and to prevent bias in type element descriptions.

I discovered today the powerful application possibilities of the MBTI for coaching and for advanced leadership development. Again, although MBTI is a " type" assessment and DiSC is a "trait" assessmet, I'm still of the opinion that DiSC is easier to remember and thus most likely to implement than MBTI for supervision courses, service, sales and team building programs for self-awareness and discovering/valuing differences. I do think that MBTI is much more robust and comprehensive for use in individual coaching settings and in advanced leadership programs.

Also - Day Two: another test! Whew. Only 2 more days to go and three more tests.....

DAY ONE - MBTI Certification in Tampa

Wow - it's been a really long time since I've been tested and had my exam graded by my teacher while I waited with a line of my classmates behind me. Can you spell S-T-R-E-S-S-E-D out? Add to the peer pressure, the requirement to achieve 80% on each test, each day. Thankfully, I didn't humiliate myself and have the opportunity to return tomorrow.

I am quite impressed with the facilitator. By sheer luck, coincidence, fate, whatever, I have the privilege of being certified by a past-CEO of CAPT, the certifying organization. The man is a brilliant facilitator, experienced with the tool and its many applications and has a cadre of stories, examples and illustrations to share with us. It is an incredible opportunity that I'm extremely grateful for! As facilitators, he is providing us with years of tips, lessons learned that will be invaluable to us as we begin facilitating our own programs.

Day One morning was spent with an overview of the instrument's background, its origins in Jungian psychology, and a fascinating story of Katherine Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Briggs Myers. We quickly went into the elements of personality type, their definitions and examples. The afternoon was spent with a variety of interactive team and large group exercises to engage us in a working knoweldge of the definitions. They also helped us to review for the afternoon exam.

Day One ended with the exam... and instructions to prepare for our role play tomorrow. Day Two will begin with a role play in which we will take turns practicing the interpretation of our Client's report and verifying it with the Client's self-assessment.

All in all - a good day and a confirmation of money well spent for an investment in knowledge and personal growth!

One Day Prior To MBTI Certification

Before spending four days in a closed room for training, I spent one day on the Florida beaches, soaking up the rays and fresh air. First stop, Indian Rocks Beach. Second stop, De Soto Beach - rated America's #1 Beach in 2005. Great place for R&R...

Tomorrow - 7 am...training registration and sequestering begins for certification!

'Til Tomorrow, folks!

MBTI Certification Process

This begins a new blog series to capture my experiences leading up to and including the week of certification for the MBTI (Myers Briggs Type Indicator Instrument).

My decision to gain certification in MBTI was two fold. One reason stemmed from a new client who will be implementing MBTI within its leadership curriculum. As part of their training team, I want to ensure that each of the leadership programs that I offer will support and reinforce the learning from the other programs, including the MBTI training.

A second reason is that the MBTI is a powerful coaching tool for use with my individual clients and client groups such as The Women's Leadership Advisory Board. MBTI is one of the world's most widely used personality instruments for coaching and leadership development and offers significant application and insights for individuals, teams, and organizations in the areas of conflict management, team building, career preferences, personal growth, leadership development and more.

Signing up for the certification was easy. There are three different certifying organizations, including CAPT (Center for Applications of Psychological Type), the one that I chose, simply because the schedule of training was convenient for me. Pricing was about the same regardless of the provider: from $1200-$1400 with AMA (American Management Association) priced the highest.

Homework was delivered about 2 weeks prior to the start of the certification date with the instructions to begin immediately. Delay is not in your best interest - the homework contained about 5 manuals and 10 hours of reading and pre-tests. They weren't kidding. Couple the quantity with the quality of retention expected by CAPT, and you start bearing down on the books right away. You soon discover that each day in the four days of certification training will require additional reading and a test everyday to ensure your comprehension of the material.

A note of comfort: although MBTI is a personality type indicator assessment and not an assessment based on how much or how little you possess of certain behavioral traits (as does the DiSC assessment), if you have had familiarity with behavioral or observable trait assessments like DiSC, then you will be able to process the information regarding MBTI quickly. The message for both instruments is to be aware that differences exist, value those differences and enhance our relationships, working environments, teams, organizations, and lives as a result. Always easier said than done which is why scores of individuals have been through MBTI certification since the 1940's to bring greater awareness to our organizations and clients.

A note of caution: If you're not familiar with any personality type indicator assessments like MBTI or behavioral trait assessments such as DiSC, you will need to spend much more upfront study time to assimilate the information within the homework for MBTI certification. If you don't pass the individual tests each day, you don't pass certification and you don't get your money back. WIth the price tag of $1200-$1400 for the certification, air fare, hotel and meal charges for the week, that's a hefty price to pay for lack of preparation.

STAY TUNED for DAY ONE of Certification Training which begins on Tuesday. Tomorrow (Monday), I'm treating myself to a bit of R&R on the sunny beach to soak up a few glorious moments of Florida sunshine before confining myself to a week indoors.
